- There was a young and brilliant student of a local school who by dint of hard work got distinction in his first attempt of the common entrance exams to further his education in one of the big schools in the city. Unfortunately for him his academic prowess began to fall upon coming into contact with the students he met at the city and he began to sink. He lost himself and all he could do because he felt he was unworthy and incapable to be there and that the students from the city had that might he didn’t have. It took the intervention of a teacher who knew him from his village to bring him back on track.
Like the young boy, this is the predicament of most Christians. Christians do not know their worth and value and as result they have become a prey to life circumstances and are living mediocre lives, to successfully live and enjoy the valued life, you must know your worth. This is important because knowing your worth is associated with a greater sense of well-being and life satisfaction. It impacts everything you do from your relationships, to how you work, how you feel about yourself, and how others view you.
Self-worth can simply be defined as an internal sense of being good enough and deserving of love and belonging from others.
It is important to note that self-worth is not self-esteem which largely depends on external factors such as achievements, successes and belongings. Self-worth is knowing your value, which Christ has made you as result of His death on the cross. The Apostle Paul puts it this way ‘You have been bought with a price’(1 Corinthians 6:20). What price? The price of Jesus Christ dying on the cross so you can have life. He who was God himself but out of love for you endured the shameful form of death on the cross so you can have life and have it abundantly.
This price is more than your belongings, successes, achievements and all that you can think thereof. You are a high priced value and you need to know and walk and live it to the max. Dr. Christina Hibbert puts it better when she wrote;
“self-worth is recognizing ‘you are greater than what you think and feel and believe about yourself (including your achievements, belongings and successes). It is a deep knowing that you are of value, that you are loveable, necessary to this life (because you been bought with a price) and of incomprehensible worth (emphasis added). (Dr. Christina Hibbert, 2013)
So anytime life circumstance and people around you look down on your worth and value or will want you to feel less of yourself, you would want to pause for a minute and ask yourself; who is he that says a thing and it comes to pass? It is the Lord, and He has declared; for I know the plans I have for you, says the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and future ( Jeremiah 29:11).
Live this truth, for the valued life requires such attitude.
God Bless You
