Revelation 3 :1-3
“To the angel of the church in Sardis write: These are the words of him who holds the seven spirits of God and the seven stars. I know your deeds; you have a reputation of being alive, but you are dead.
Wake up! Strengthen what remains and is about to die, for I have not found your deeds complete in the sight of my God.
Remember, therefore, what you have received and heard; obey it, and repent. But if you do not wake up, I will come like a thief, and you will not know at what time I will come to you.
To the one who thinks he is standing, let him take heed lest he falls(1 Corinthians 10:12).
So the city of Sardis was once the capital of Lydian Region in Asian Minor and because of the way it was built, it had gradually took on some natural defences which made the city looked protected. The people in the city became careless and thought they needed no extra guarding because of the natural protection the city had assumed. They thought they were safe but after a while they were captured by Cyprus of Persia and later by the Romans through these so called natural protection routes.
Sadly this was the same situation for the church in Sardis. They also had a reputation for being alive but what they didn’t know was that they were lacking in the sight of God( dead in the sight of God).
Proverbs 16:18 says ” pride goes before a destruction , a haughty spirit before a fall”, this was the case of the church in Sardis. They became over confidence and careless. They actually thought they were on fire for God and didn’t need any help.
Dear believer, you don’t ever have to get this far, work on your spiritual needs everyday. Do not think that you need no more growth. Growth is a process and it takes a life time. Wake up from your slackness and complacency. We can never know God enough, there will always be more to know. Do not rely on what you know now and think you are done. Wake up from your sleep!
Make it a daily routine to be alive and on fire for God. You may be sleeping because you think you are already alive but today the spirit is saying we should wake up.
