THE FEAR OF GOD

Welcome back! In our previous post we highlighted  that fear manifest in two ways and this depends on the spirit it is manifesting from. Let me reiterate that fear is backed by a spirit and that’s why it has the power to control you. This week, we will look at fear that manifest out of the Spirit of God (Holy Spirit) what many people will term as ‘The Fear of God’.

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding. (Proverbs 9:10)

When the Bible talks about fearing God, it is usually referring to an attitude of reverence and respect, it signifies a profound awe and reverence for God, acknowledging God’s infinite power, majesty, and goodness and not terror or anxiety. This leads to humility, gratitude, and a desire to live a life that pleases Him as Moses wrote in Deuteronomy 10:12-13.

And now, Israel, what does the LORD your God ask of you but to fear the LORD your God, to walk in obedience to him, to love him, to serve the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul, 13 and to observe the LORD’s commands and decrees that I am giving you today for your own good? (Deuteronomy 10:12-13.)

We understand from scriptures that the fear of God is a powerful internal motivator for adhering to moral principles. It reminds you of the fact that you are accountable to a higher authority (God) and the potential consequences of wrongdoing. This serves as a guide for you to live right virtuously. In Deuteronomy 10:12-13 as quoted above, Moses reminds the people of Israel of what God seeks from them; an attitude of complete reverence and dedication to God. This helps you to be constantly in tune with the Holy Spirit for guidance and direction and your endeavors.

Benefits of fearing God

Fearing God is a principal thing, a virtue every Christian must possess, a treasure to hold on to after salvation. It is of no mistake why it is written several times in the bible to fear God. I will share with you two of this benefits.

  • It leads to life: The fear of the LORD lead sto life, And he who has it will abide in satisfaction; He will not be visited with evil (Proverbs 9:23). It is interesting how God makes it so simple for you to have life and have it more abundantly. All He needs from you is to Fear Him. Get to know what He seeks from you and leave a life that is pleasing and acceptable to Him. Proverbs 10:27 seals it with the words: The fear of the LORD adds length to life, but the years of the wicked are cut short.

  • It leads to wisdom: Wisdom is a principal thing that every human being must seek. It’s true that sometimes wisdom comes with experience. As we get older, we learn from past experiences what to do or what not to do. But wisdom is not only something that comes with age. Wisdom is putting your understanding to use. Proverbs 9:10 say the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding. That is, your first point of receiving wisdom is to fear God. Wisdom flows from seeing God for who he is, and responding to God appropriately. Like this is the beginning. So, wisdom starts with a God centered view of the world. That is so key. Because there is so much that passes for wisdom in the world, that doesn’t spring from this source (God).

Make a move today to fear God, seek Him, acknowledge him in all your ways and make a conscious and intentional effort to live for Him so that your days on earth will be full and fulfilled.

GOD BLESS YOU
